The witches – Stacy Schiff

28449076._UY200_.jpgThis was not an easy book to read but it was fascinating. My (and I’m sure many others) version of events has been carefully ‘created’ completely by Miller’s The Crucible. The factual events discussed in this blow that understanding away – from the age of Abigail and Betty (12 and 10) to that of John Proctor (60). The description of how the evidence against the witches was collected and collated – at best summarised, at worst completely omitted actual evidence was astounding.
If you love history, and this period in particular, persevere. The social context of the story – an America in the 17th century where different religious factions were vying for ‘souls’ , then persevere with this.
